In September, 2005 the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel will be temporarily closed for up to two years, to retrofit it for use by both buses and light rail. This means that the buses that currently use the tunnel will travel through downtown using surface streets.

Prior to the tunnel closure, Sound Transit, the City of Seattle, King County Metro Transit and Community Transit will be providing over $16 million in street improvements in downtown Seattle, to mitigate the impacts of the increase in buses on downtown surface streets. These mitigation measures will help buses move through downtown as quickly as possible during the temporary tunnel closure.

These improvements will be occurring on streets and/or sidewalks in the following locations in downtown Seattle:
  • Third Avenue between Main and Virginia
  • Olive Way between Third Avenue and Boren
  • Prefontaine Place South
  • Fifth Avenue South between Dearborn and South Washington
  • Second and fourth avenues (many new bus shelters and expanded bus stops)
We would like the downtown community to be as informed as possible about the street improvements, prior to their implementation. Please join us at one of three open houses occurring this June. The four agencies will be providing detailed information about changes to downtown streets and sidewalks, in preparation for the temporary closure of the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel. Information will be provided about incentive programs to encourage employees to take the bus or rideshare, and about the various ways the effectiveness of these improvements will be monitored. The four agencies would also like to hear any feedback you may have about these improvements.

All of the open houses are at Union Station at the intersection of Fourth Avenue South and South Jackson. You may use any south-bound bus in the bus tunnel by getting off at the International District Station. The entrances to Union Station are adjacent to this tunnel station. Feel free to stop by at any time during the open houses. Sound Transit, King County Metro Transit, Community Transit and City of Seattle staff will be on hand to provide detailed information about the street improvements, answer questions, and collect feedback.
